Psychiatric Evaluation

An initial psychiatric evaluation is an opportunity to step back and look at the full picture. Symptoms, history, past treatments, health, and life circumstances all shape what’s happening today. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is how we make sense of them together.

During Your Evaluation, We May Discuss

At the end of your evaluation or at a follow-up visit, your provider will discuss their diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations with you. We’ll take the time to answer questions and explain the reasoning behind our recommendations so you can make informed decisions about your care.

Common Questions About Psychiatric Evaluations

How long is an evaluation?
Your initial evaluation typically lasts about 60–90 minutes. This gives us time to understand what’s bringing you in, review your history and past treatment experiences, and talk about your goals for care. The visit is designed to feel like a conversation rather than a checklist, with enough time to explore the full picture. Follow-up visits are shorter, typically 20–25 minutes.
Do I need a referral?
In most cases, no. You can schedule directly with us. Some insurance plans do require a referral from a primary care provider before they'll cover specialty care, so it's worth a quick call to the number on the back of your insurance card to check. If you're not sure, we're happy to help you figure it out.
What should I prepare for my visit?
Please have your insurance card, photo ID, a list of any medications or supplements you’re currently taking (including doses), and the name of your preferred pharmacy. If you’ve received psychiatric care before, it can also be helpful to know which medications you’ve tried and what your experience with them was — but don’t worry if you can’t remember everything. We also encourage you to think about what you’d most like help with or hope to get out of treatment. Even a general idea gives us a good place to start.
Is this visit confidential?
Yes. What you share with us stays private, and we take that seriously. Your health information is protected by federal and Oregon privacy laws, and we don’t share it with anyone, including family, employers, or other providers, without your written permission. There are a few situations where the law requires or allows us to share information without your consent, mainly to keep you or others safe.
These include:

  • If you’re at serious risk of harming yourself or someone else

  • If we suspect abuse or neglect of a child, an older adult, or a vulnerable adult

  • If we receive a valid court order

If something like this comes up, we’ll talk with you about it whenever we can and share only what’s necessary. Our Notice of Privacy Practices explains your rights in more detail, and we’re always happy to answer questions about privacy at any point in your care.
What happens after the evaluation?
At the end of your evaluation, we'll review what we've learned, discuss any diagnostic impressions, and talk through recommendations for next steps. Depending on your needs, this may include medication, therapy, additional testing, or further assessment. If medication is recommended, we can discuss your options and send any prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy. We'll also discuss when to follow up and what to expect as your care moves forward.
